Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita

The Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) is India’s updated criminal law that replaced the Indian Penal Code, marking a major shift from colonial-era legislation to a modern, India-centric legal framework. It came into effect on 1 July 2024 with the objective of ensuring justice, transparency, and efficiency in the criminal justice system.

BNS redefines various offenses and introduces provisions to address emerging crimes such as cybercrime, organized crime, and terrorism. It places strong emphasis on protecting women, children, and vulnerable groups, while also focusing on victim-centric justice. The law aims to ensure quicker trials, clearer legal definitions, and stricter punishments for serious offenses.

By removing outdated provisions and simplifying legal language, the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita reflects India’s evolving societal needs and strengthens the foundation of a fair, accountable, and effective criminal justice system.
